Selective mutism, listed in DSM-V as an anxiety disorder, usually starts in childhood. It says that it could affect up to 1 in 100 children. But I strongly feel that selective mutism is often too diluted and runs the risk of just being understood as the inability to speak in certain situations.

Typically, cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS) has been seen in children and only rarely described in adults after surgery of the posterior fossa. Adults with selective mutism can undergo stimulus fading as another method of treatment. This intervention involves gradual exposure to a fear-evoking stimulus, including talking in the presence of an unfamiliar person in the same room, interacting with others in a campaign group , and speaking in front of a small group. Mutism in adults is often caused by either shock or neurological problems, and most commonly it may occur in the older populations.

So when a student in the upper elementary or secondary grades has SM, it’s safe to assume that he or she has been living with Selective Mutism for many years.

Younger adults, women, and those with children in their household are more likely to know someone who may have selective mutism. Those who know someone who may have selective mutism are most likely to be a family member or acquaintance of the affected individual.
